What is a Multifunction Display

Multifunction displays (MFDs) are displays that have the capability to act as more than one type of electronic equipment.  In effect they can, for example, be a chartplotter one moment and a radar display or echosounder the next.  In recent years MFDs have become much more affordable, with screen sizes in the leisure market ranging from five to nineteen inches.

The technology
This is possible through the action of NMEA 2000, the leading electronic standard that allows the creation of networks.  With NMEA 2000, instead of a particular transducer being plugged into a particular display, all the transducers, sensors and displays plug directly into a single network cable, which then allows them to freely share information with each other.  Multifunction displays come with the necessary software (depending on the type and model) to then process the information from each of the different sensors and display it according to the selections made by the user.

MFDs with split-screen functionality can display a range of data simultaneously.

What can I display on my multifunction display?
The majority of multifunction displays function as chartplotters right out of the box, with the higher-specification models coming with pre-loaded charts.  The functionality thereafter will depend on the model selected, but generally the addition of an echosounder transducer will enable it to operate as a full-function echo sounder/ fishfinder, and in more advanced models plugging in a radar will enable it to act as a radar monitor.  Other compatible equipment will generally include wind and performance instrumentation, AIS transceivers, autopilots, engine sensors, VHF radios and also video inputs and wireless remote controls.

The key is NMEA 2000; if a piece of electronic equipment has that capability then, subject to confirming model and manufacturer compatibility, an MFD should be able to both display its data and allow full control.

Advantages
Cost reduction - one display can act as a range of instruments, given the installation of the necessary transducers and sensors.  The ability for the user to select which will depend on his requirements at any particular time.  This allows the boat owner to purchase just one display for use with all his navigation and performance sensors and transducers.

Saving space – in places where space is limited one MFD can ensure that the user has instant access to all the information available from his network.

Versatility – MFDs can be easily upgraded or added to a network over time as requirements change, as can individual sensors and transducers.

Aesthetics – a bridge or navigation area can feature a series of identical displays mounted together, despite the wide range of information being processed and displayed.  This can contribute to the creation of a clean, co-ordinated look.
